Berlin – The Capital of Germany
Berlin is the capital of Germany and has also »Länder« (federal state) status. It is the official residence of the German federal government, hosting parliament, upper house of the German parliament, federal ministries, presidential residence, embassies, federal offices and agencies. A second governmental residence is Bonn, which was the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany (»West Germany«) between 1949 and 1994. Between 1949 and 1989/1990, Berlin was divided into East- and West-Berlin, with East-Berlin being the capital of the German Democratic Republic (»East-Germany«).
The reunited Berlin has 3.4 Million residents (Metropolitan region: 6 Million). Berlin is a multi-cultural capital: 25 non-German ethnical groups, each with more than 10,000 people, live in Berlin (more than 22% of the population).
